Seat Alhambra Seat Alhambra The SEAT Alhambra has been designed for families that don’t like coming second. Being an MPV, you’d expect roominess. Being a SEAT you'd expect the Alhambra to take MPV's places they've never been before. And it does: real sports handling and responsiveness, real excitement behind the wheel, real space innovation, real safety … and all for real sporty families. With an added twist of Seat spice the Alhambra offers the same space and functionality of close relatives, the VW Sharan and Ford Galaxy, but at a friendlier price. If you're in the market for a large MPV, the Seat Alhambra can't be ignored. The range includes a range-topping 2.8 litre V6 engine producing 204bhp, or a 2.0 litre with 115 bhp. Diesel buyers can choose from either a 105bhp 1.9-litre or a 140bhp 2.0-litre. The latter would be our choice, if we could stretch to the extra it costs over the still-impressive 1.9-litre. Exterior detailing sports the family central 'nostril' grille seen on other Seat models, which works well with the steeply raked frontal styling. Widely-spaced 'Alhambra' badging on the rear tailgate now matches other Seat models, too. Various trims are available, again reflecting the rest of the Seat family, and all offer better value than the respective Ford or Volkswagen. ESP and curtain airbags are now standard on all. Seat's trademark red instrument illumination seems particularly vivid here, though. Unlike many MPVs, the Alhambra is a competent driver's machine providing a surprisingly sharp responses from the lofty driving position, and with the 140bhp TDI version you have practicality with punch. Indeed, it's good enough to make the 2.8-litre V6 range-topper seem pointless. Be quick though; along with the Ford and Volkswagen, Alhambra production seems likely to cease in 2006. Seat Ibiza Seat Ibiza Seat's Ibiza is the Spanish firm's sister model to the Skoda Fabia and the classy VW Polo. As with all Seat's the emphasis is biased towards a sporting nature with a dose of pizzazz to appeal to a younger buyer. So the new Ibiza gets a curvy instrument cluster, funky round air vents and, well, not much more to spice it up, really. It also gets a pretty firm ride that aids steering response but copes less well on town bumps. Another consequence is tyre noise that seems more intrusive than on other superminis. The seats, on the other hand, are firm and well shaped, and although legroom in the back is hardly generous, the high seating position makes this a more preferable place to travel than the Polo. Seat Altea XL Seat Altea XL While the XL offers a bigger and more useable load area than the standard Altea, SEAT's claims that it will appeal to estate buyers are wide of the mark. It lacks family friendly cabin cleverness, and crucially omits seven seats. Look at the new Altea XL from the front, and you'll be oblivious to the fact it's not a standard Altea - the differences are very much of the blink-an-you-miss-it variety. Walk around to the back, though, and you'll see new lines, new rear lights and a totally new shape. The most important difference, though, is that the XL is 18.7cm longer than the standard car. So does this mean that the Altea has finally been given the seven seats that its MPV-like looks suggest? Well, no. What you do get is a bigger boot and more rear legroom. Seat says that the XL is aimed at possible Altea buyers for whom five seats are fine, but who want a bit more space than the standard Altea can provide. On this brief, the XL certainly delivers.
